Sun Salutation

The Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun

Maybe the most attractive highlights of Zadar Bike Route.

The Sea Organ is one of Zadar’s most unique attractions. Built right on the waterfront, it’s a series of marble steps with hidden pipes underneath. When the waves hit, the water pushes air through the pipes, creating peaceful, harmonic sounds. It’s like nature playing its music. It’s the perfect spot to sit, relax, and take in the views of the sea while listening to this soothing melody.

Next to the Sea Organ is the Greeting to the Sun, a large circle made of glass panels embedded with solar cells. During the day, it absorbs sunlight, and at night, it lights up with colorful patterns that match the rhythm of the Sea Organ’s sounds. It’s a beautiful way to end the day, watching the lights and listening to the music as the sun sets over the Adriatic.

St. Donatus Zadar

The Sun Greeting and Sea Organ might grab the spotlight, especially for those looking for the perfect Instagram shot. But just a short walk away, you’ll find St. Donatus, standing tall for over a thousand years. This incredible church is one of Zadar’s most iconic landmarks and a true masterpiece of early medieval architecture.

Take a few moments to visit this fascinating structure and the Roman Forum surrounding it, where ancient history comes to life. It’s a peaceful reminder of the city’s rich past and a great place to step back in time.

Here’s a tip many visitors miss: you can climb the bell tower of the Cathedral of St Anastasia, right next door. From the top, you’ll get one of the best panoramic views of Zadar, stretching from the Old Town to the shimmering Adriatic Sea. Don’t skip it—it’s worth the climb!

Foša Zadar

Land Gate (Foša) Zadar

The Land Gate in Zadar, also known as Foša, is one of the most beautiful entrances to the Old Town. Built in the 16th century by the Venetians, it served as the main gateway into the city.

The gate features a large central arch for vehicles and two smaller side arches for pedestrians. Above the main arch, you’ll see the Lion of St. Mark, a symbol of Venice, reminding us of Zadar’s long history under Venetian rule.

This spot is perfect for a quick photo and a peaceful walk along the nearby small harbor.

Panoramic view from WW2

Perched high above the city, Vidikovac is Zadar’s newest and least-known attraction. Once a neglected Italian bunker, it has recently been transformed into a peaceful viewpoint and historical site as part of the European project “REVIVAL.” Even many locals are unaware of this hidden treasure!

The area now features a 180-meter walking path, modern stone benches, and rest areas, making it an ideal spot to take a break and enjoy stunning panoramic views of Zadar and the nearby islands. The bunker itself, named C-47, is being restored into a multifunctional space with an interactive exhibition showcasing Zadar’s fortifications and military history.

If you’re into history or just love exploring off-the-beaten-path places, Vidikovac is worth the climb. It’s a quiet escape with incredible views, perfect for both sightseeing and relaxing during your Zadar bike route adventure.

Lighthouse Puntamika Zadar

Lighthouse Puntamika

The Puntamika Peninsula is a charming spot on this Zadar Bike tour.

Puntamika Lighthouse was built in 1869 during the Austro-Hungarian era. This 14-meter-high tower once guided sailors safely into Zadar’s harbor. While modern technology has replaced the lighthouse keepers, the structure remains a symbol of maritime history and offers a nostalgic glimpse into the past.

Today, Puntamika is perfect for a relaxing break. There’s a beach bar with breathtaking views of Zadar’s Old Town and a nearby beach where you can unwind, swim, or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Whether you’re cycling or exploring on foot, Puntamika is a must-visit spot to recharge and soak in Zadar’s beauty.

The sphinx of zadar

As you continue your Zadar bike route, make sure to visit the Sphinx of Zadar, a hidden gem located in the Brodarica neighborhood. This intriguing monument was commissioned by local artist and historian Giovanni Smirich in 1918, in memory of his beloved wife, Attilia.

Unlike traditional Egyptian sphinxes, Zadar's version features unique characteristics, such as human-like hands instead of paws, which once held a sword protecting a shell-shaped pond. Over time, various legends have emerged, including tales of hidden treasures beneath the statue and its power to grant love wishes.

The Sphinx is situated within the grounds of Villa Attilia and the surrounding park in Maestral Bay, offering a peaceful spot to rest and reflect during your ride. The park is open year-round with free entrance, making it an accessible and worthwhile stop on your journey.

FAQ and Tips

Do you have an appropriate bike for Zadar bike route?

Yes, I offer a range of bikes suitable for this route, including trekking bikes, and cross bikes with front suspension as well as city bikes. For those who don't want to pedal, I also rent electric scooters at www.electricscooterzadar.com

Which bike is the most appropriate for this route?

A trekking/cross bike or city bike. My advice would be trekking/cross in case you want to climb to the Vidikovac.

What happens if we have a flat tire on the island?

We equip all our bikes with anti-puncture tires, repair kits, pumps, and spare inner tubes to minimize the risk of flats. However, if a flat tire happens and you are not sure how to fix it contact us and we might help through a video call. Otherwise we can provide road assistance (based on availability) within delivery zone for additional fee of 30€.

Is this route family friendly?

The route is generally family-friendly with mostly flat terrain. However, keep in mind almost the whole route follows public roads with limited bike lanes. So parental discretion is advised based on children's cycling experience and endurance.

If you still decide to go with children my advice would be to skip climbing to Vidikovac since that is the most difficult part and also a traffic-heavy road.

What should I bring for the tour?

Ensure you have sufficient water, sun protection, a hat, and comfortable cycling attire. It is also a great idea to bring swimming equipment so you can enjoy swimming at Punta Bajlo or at the lighthouse in Puntamika.
